Georgina Spelvin Tells Us about Husband #1-PICS
I asked Georgina -How many times have you been married? Can you tell us a little bit about each one? So here we go with the first of several posts, lol.
This is husband #1 by Georgina Spelvin
Husband one
Was loads of fun;
A gorgeous, clever Brit.
A bit O’Toole,
A bit, the fool,
But always quite the wit.

About a week into Mother’s stay, my pal, Deedee who sits next to me in the chorus dressing room says, “My boyfriend’s roommate wants to date you. Wanna go out with us after the show tonight?”
“I don’t know. What’s he like?”
“Adorable, blond, and British. Come on. It’ll be fun.”
“I don’t know. I’m in slacks.”
“No problem. We’re just gonna get a bite at Joe Allen’s or something.”
Instead we pick up deli and beer and have a jolly good party at out apartment with Cherie (my roommie), Donald (her beau), and Mom (visiting from Texas). When the rounds of drinks and jokes winds down we walk Deedee, Rob (her fella), and CB – the blond Brit to the front door.
“Alright then,” says the Englishman to me. “May I knock you up tomorrow?”
I’m speechless. After all. We’ve just met! The well-traveled Cherie quickly clarifies.
“He means he wants to come by tomorrow morning.”
“Oh. Well, sure. By all means, please do.”
It was well into Mom’s third week there and about our fourth date, I think, that CB and I sneaked into the small room in the center of the apartment after the rest of the world was asleep. This room had been requisitioned to serve as everyone’s closet – there being a dearth of the real things in the place. Several rolling clothes racks from a clearance sale in the garment district held wardrobe enough for a summer stock theater. Suitcases, boxes, and what all were stacked around the walls. Donald called it the Thrift Shop. At times it served as yet another spare room for temporary guests, so there was a nice pile of bedding in one corner. There, as quietly as possible, the gorgeous Brit and I took each other’s measure and found it much to our mutual liking.

Mom went back to Texas and I suspect reserved the church for a wedding the first chance she got. CB and I got an apartment together when Cherie and her fella, Donald, DID get married. When my show (Pajama Game) closed, we really didn’t have any excuse not to make the trip to Texas and up the aisle.
One good reason for getting married, was that I was asked to go to South Africa to re-stage the choreography and star in a production of Pajama Game. Fred H, the stage manager who had picked me out of an audition for Damn Yankees, offering me the job in the chorus of PJ Game the year before, was to direct. Needless to say, I had fallen head over heels in love with him long before meeting CB. He offered CB the job of stage manager. That was a very interesting tour.
CB and I played at being married for nearly three years. Both working actors, the stints away from home wore the bonds of matrimony to threads rather quickly. We realized neither was ready for monogomy, so we fixed it with a quicky Mexican divorce.
We became great friends and he eventually married my best bud, Stella. The four of us were close. Now the three of us still are: Stell, John and Me. CB, light of foot as he was, couldn’t out dance the Big C and left us April 1st, 2000.
