Sinnamon Love Shows me some Love
Hello Cindi,
I know its been awhile since we’ve spoken, so I wanted to send you a little note about what I’ve been up to these days. I know when we last spoke over the fall of 2009, I mentioned that I was one of the writers published in David Henry Sterry’s new Anthology “Ho’s, Hookers, Call Girls and Rent Boys,” (http://hoshookerscallgirlsrentboys.com) along side industry heavy weights such as Nina Hartley and Georgina Spelvin. Shortly afterwards, I took a 2 week vacation in New York instead of attending AVN this year. With prospects for writing columns for 2 mainstream magazines on the horizon, I decided that I really wanted to focus on my writing & diversifying with new business development this year.
While I’m still available for hardcore & fetish video shoots, I’ve recently taken a new role in my career; poet and actress. Unlike many of my cohorts that have desires of crossing over, I am not looking to hang up my stilettos and try my hand at a mainstream career. I am however pleased to announce that I have officially joined the cast of Jessica Holter’s Punany Poets 2010 “The Head Doctor” tour. You may remember The Punany Poets from many HBO’s Real Sex appearances. The group uses erotic poetry, sensual dance, dramatic and sexy skits to not only titillate the audience but educate as well.
Jessica Holter started off as a hip hop/music journalist who created The Punany Poets in 1995 in the wake of rapper Easy E’s death from HIV/AIDS. Having seen so much going on backstage at concerts with groupies having unprotected sex with guys they barely knew, she used this platform of blatant sexual performance art to open a dialogue within a community that was rapidly increasing in HIV infection. She has since not only been featured on HBO, but has published 7 books of poetry and is set to release her first erotic novel, The Punany Experience, this summer. I met Jessica last October while hosting a Black Swinger’s Convention at Hedo 2 in Negril, Jamaica in which she was performing. We spoke in length about my personal writing, both as a journalist, writer and poet – so needless to say that with her background, when she requested to read some of my work, I was extremely nervous. I emailed her a handful of poems and was thrilled when she replied asking me to join the cast of this year’s tour as both a dancer and a poet.
My writing has always been a passion of mine, as for years I have written for print magazines such as the now defunct Black Mystique ( produced by legendary industry photographer Fred Salaff,) & porn/ hip hop publication Fish ‘N Grits along with conducting interviews for HipHopDX.com and others. This opportunity has presented itself a new opportunity and challenge – to perform in front of large audiences in a manner that they are not accustomed to seeing me in. As an adult actress with a career spanning 16 years, I have seen many of my co-workers attempt and fail miserably at “crossing over,” with only a handful being successful. It has long been my belief that those that have attempted to separate themselves from the career and fans that put them on the map, have failed because they attempted to denounce what made them famous in the first place. Let’s face it, we aren’t “real actresses,” and if most of us could make it as a singer or rapper we wouldn’t have gotten into porn in the first place. I love my job… I’ve never desired to be a music video vixen, or roles in mainstream movies, and have taken bit parts in movies like 2003′s This Girl’s Life or Talib Kweli’s Everything Man video, not out of an attempt to “make it,” but as favors to friends & good clean fun, (of course, getting paid for such roles didn’t hurt either.)
When I joined The Punany Poets on stage in Miami during Superbowl Weekend, I had not been on a big stage reciting lines like that since I played Phoebe in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, in a Shakespearean Festival during high school at Cal Poly Pomona, (I won 2nd place for my scene.) This was completely different.. The sold out crowd at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium was there to see a renown group perform – and I was apart of it. I completely forgot my piece, something quite personal I wrote in 2008 regarding a love affair that I was beginning at that time with porn director Jax. I had rehearsed all day and the butterflies simply would not give me a break. So I took a moment, gathered myself, and apologized to the audience, confessing that I had never performed this piece for anyone before. The audience cheered me on with a rousing round of applause. It was amazing… I pulled it together and finished the piece, ending it by stripping out of my black latex skirt and top down to my sheer black bra & panties before going into a sensual tease in a bathtub. It was fun… I was bitten by the bug.
The rest of the show was a success, as I enacted a piece titled “Baby Mookie’s Momma,” a voice-over of an impoverished teen mother sitting in a welfare office with her baby, waiting to apply for Medi-Cal because her “baby daddy” had given her an STD from having sex with a crack-head. Throughout the show, I found the audience reacting exactly as they were meant to… excited, turned on, and shocked at the matter-of-fact manner in which some of these stories were conveyed by our show.
Last weekend I again joined the group in Washington D.C. for 2 Valentine’s Day Weekend shows. We had a larger cast and added a few pieces that included conversations of “Down-Low” married men hiding their bisexuality from their wives as well as pieces that celebrated & showed appreciation for Black men & Black Love. One of my followers on Twitter, a 25 year old Black male, came to the Valentine’s Day dinner and show alone and became a part of our show. I had contacted a group I often work as a spoke model for, The Know Now Organization, (http://TKNO.org,) and had him send over 2 of his local mobile testers to the venue to be apart of the show. The gentleman agreed to be tested live on stage as a part of the show. Halfway through the show, I came out to greet the audience, started flirting with the fan and hinted at taking him home with me… then asked him to take an HIV test. We had wanted to show how easy it is to have the discussion of getting tested with a prospective lover, and after having had the conversation with him beforehand, he agreed to being an impromptu part of the cast in this manner. I had one of the testers come on stage, and we administered the OraQuick HIV test, (the only FDA approved oral swab for HIV,) right there in front of an audience of over 250 people. The audience was taken aback, but certainly interested when we revealed at the end of the show that the guy did indeed test negative. (I should note that we had discussed what to do in the event of the test being positive, and agreed to provide him with results off stage ahead of time and not at all on stage should they be positive.)
One of my favorite parts of the show is a little “Girl Talk,” with the audience, where we have a couple of women join us on stage for a frank discussion about sex. We involve the ladies & have a little fun in having them give their feedback in the proper way to ride a dick, (with my giving a demo of their instructions with a male attendee,) then progressing into conversations on eating pussy, sucking cock, squirting, anal sex – or any other questions the audience throws our way. The conversation always leads to safe sex and testing your partner… and always proves to be rowdy and fun.
I have been completely enamoured with this project and am truly thrilled to be a part of it. I can’t tell you what it feels like to receive emails in the days after our shows from women and men expressing how much they enjoyed, not my video performances, but my poetry and my on stage performance. In the next few months, the tour will be making its way to Houston, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Oakland and New York, with talks of Los Angeles and Las Vegas being added soon. This is a one year tour, so more dates are certain to be added to the calendar. Anyone interested in attending the show in their area should visit, http://punanytickets.com for detailed dates and pricing.
In the interim, anyone interested in booking me for video or photo shoots should contact Lisa Ann’s Talent Management, http://lisaanntalentmanagement.com or me directly at sinnamon.love@gmail.com. I should probably add that I also just took over the co-host position on Sex Spaz on http://TSRNetwork.com last month. The show airs Wednesdays from 6pm-8pm PST.
And of course, blah blah blah, visit http://SinnamonLove.com blah blah blah…
