Jamie Gillis E-mails Shared by Denise
Hi Cindi,
Terrible news, the passing of Jamie Gillis.
He was one of my all-tie favorite male porn stars.
Jamie was a quiet, perhaps shy/illusive man; more one I suspect to communicate to through his film work and sexual language than the spoken word to people he did not know so well.
But he did make himself available as best as he was able to me and so I share with you a few emails he sent to me over the years.
He’s sent me eventually the reference photo and had several times told me to call him and apologized for being “illusive” but he promised me he eventually would give me an interview.
He never got around to it.
Did not pick up his phone ever.
I suspect he was a very private men.
He was swift in getting a reference photo to me so I could paint him and was not one bit snobby.
He was a bit of a cute flirt and always polite.
Here, below are some of the emails he sent to me and I include the watercolor I painted of him.
xo
Denise
I’d sent him a photo of me with short blonde hair.
Here was his response:

Well. of course you look a little mean and icey and Hitler youthy, but to a little jewboy like myself that translates as HOT!
yeah, I’ve done some wacky stuff on and off film–master/slave whatever he situation might call for–I’m pretty flexible.

I’m not a big July 4th kind of guy–I think I would have been one of those Americans who went to Canada rather than fight for Independence–I think the world might
have been better off if everbody had done that–of course my family doesn’t feel that way so I go see them and say hello on the fourth.
Everytime I see a new example of your work I get more interested in wondering what you would do when it comes to me–a 3D meeting sounds lovely.
things are pretty quiet these days , which is fine with me,I’m sorta working on getting some bio info together for a litererary agent who wants to publish a book on me, and I like to play poker a couple of days a week.
I asked him if he will be at the LA Erotica…his response:
I ain’t gonna be there but I wish you luck in pornoland–tell Bill and Roy I said to take good care of you or they’ll answer to me.
Here is our first contact. He was very cordial.
He did indeed send me an 8×10″ black and white photo of himself in his 30′s to paint from.
Hi Denise,
I admire your work and appreciate your interest but I do not keep photos of myself, so I’m afraid you’ll have to look elsewhere if I am to be included .
The thing that most sticks in my mind about Holmes is that I never heard a girl complain that he was too big–he was considered a gentle lover by all of them.
I don’t get to many of the shows but if you are ever in New York feel free to look me up.
best,
Jamie Gillis

Aw Cindi, thanks for posting this.
I really wish I’d gotten to know Jamie.
I think my closest ‘taste’ to getting to know him was from his performance in Jane Hamilton’s amazing film Sunset Stripped where an older Jamie played an eccentric retired porn star.
I just believe no one can act as good as that. I sensed the real HIM was in that character.
Who I saw in that film was a suave, self confident older sexy as hell man with a permanently smoldering, sexually charged vibe about him; like white coals; seemingly calm but VERY hot and just right to get something *serious* hotness cooking in and around the bedroom.
I saw a highly intelligent man with an astute sense of originality and creativity-oozing out of each and every pore.
He moved like a cat who owned his lair.A leader-not a follower.
His body language in the film was that of a man who is confident and self-assured — someone who has a sexy, dark and teasingly dangerous & possibly even raunchy secret, intense raw animal passion side to him;Anything BUT “dull or run-of-the-mill”.
That is who I THINK Jamie Gillis was as a human being.
I would love to have had the opportunity to have confirmed that what I sensed about him in this great film I have seen 4 times.
All these characteristics are highly appealing to me!
The fact he – shy and private as he was- did indeed take the care and time to politely respond to my emails and partake as best as he was able to in my book-project, also tells me this was a very kind and compassionate and patient man.
Am I correct in this perception?
Only those who truly knew him could answer that.

Jamie Gillis Memorial Gathering
Saturday afternoon, 3/20, 3-6pm
Center for Sex & Culture, 1519 Mission near 11th
We will gather at CSC to say farewell to the Dark Lord of porn: the one and only Jamie Gillis died of cancer this month at the age of 66. Jamie appeared in over 470 porn films, if we can believe what we read on Wikipedia, and was a deserving member of the AVN Hall of Fame. Some of his acting work is among the strongest ever to grace an explicit movie, which is no surprise — as he told the Castro Theatre audience at Carol Queen’s Good Vibes-sponsored “Beyond Boogie Nights: Celebrating the Golden Age of the Blue Movie,” when he was recruited for his first porn job he was doing Shakespeare in the Park in New York City.
After the “Golden Age,” Jamie went on to direct kinky and gonzo features; he lived in San Francisco for many years, and was a regular habitue at North Beach cafes.
We will gather at 3pm and share memories of Jamie starting around 3:30. If anyone has any clips reels featuring his work, please get in touch! As we did for Aunt Peg, we will record the remembrances for the CSC archive, but please come even if you would prefer not to be recorded! We will not record anyone who doesn’t want to be. Please feel free to spread the word!
