Jamie Gillis Memorial Gathering

Saturday afternoon, 3/20, 3-6pm

Center for Sex & Culture, 1519 Mission near 11th

We will gather at CSC to say farewell to the Dark Lord of porn: the one and only Jamie Gillis died of cancer this month at the age of 66. Jamie appeared in over 470 porn films, if we can believe what we read on Wikipedia, and was a deserving member of the AVN Hall of Fame. Some of his acting work is among the strongest ever to grace an explicit movie, which is no surprise -- as he told the Castro Theatre audience at Carol Queen's Good Vibes-sponsored "Beyond Boogie Nights: Celebrating the Golden Age of the Blue Movie," when he was recruited for his first porn job he was doing Shakespeare in the Park in New York City.

After the "Golden Age," Jamie went on to direct kinky and gonzo features; he lived in San Francisco for many years, and was a regular habitue at North Beach cafes.

We will gather at 3pm and share memories of Jamie starting around 3:30. If anyone has any clips reels featuring his work, please get in touch! As we did for Aunt Peg, we will record the remembrances for the CSC archive, but please come even if you would prefer not to be recorded! We will not record anyone who doesn't want to be. Please feel free to spread the word!

Aw Cindi, thanks for posting this.
I really wish I'd gotten to know Jamie.
I think my closest 'taste' to getting to know him was from his performance in Jane Hamilton's amazing film Sunset Stripped where an older Jamie played an eccentric retired porn star.
I just believe no one can act as good as that. I sensed the real HIM was in that character.
Who I saw in that film was a suave, self confident older sexy as hell man with a permanently smoldering, sexually charged vibe about him; like white coals; seemingly calm but VERY hot and just right to get something *serious* hotness cooking in and around the bedroom.
I saw a highly intelligent man with an astute sense of originality and creativity-oozing out of each and every pore.
He moved like a cat who owned his lair.A leader-not a follower.
His body language in the film was that of a man who is confident and self-assured -- someone who has a sexy, dark and teasingly dangerous & possibly even raunchy secret, intense raw animal passion side to him;Anything BUT "dull or run-of-the-mill".

That is who I THINK Jamie Gillis was as a human being.
I would love to have had the opportunity to have confirmed that what I sensed about him in this great film I have seen 4 times.
All these characteristics are highly appealing to me!
The fact he - shy and private as he was- did indeed take the care and time to politely respond to my emails and partake as best as he was able to in my book-project, also tells me this was a very kind and compassionate and patient man.
Am I correct in this perception?
Only those who truly knew him could answer that.
