In 1972 I remember being 5 years old and sitting in my families’ living room with my father watching women’s Roller Derby on television. It was the only sport I watched with my Dad, I loved watching strong women play a sport and he liked watching the girls with large breasts beating on each other. Cut to the fall of 2008, when I decided that after all these years I want to join a team or at least look into what it takes to join a team. So I do what I do best, I hit the internet and not only did I find a team in my area they were having an open recruitment that very Saturday.

I contacted the owner of the team she said come on over and check us out. So that Saturday I went to their open practice, besides me there were 5 other women looking to join the team. The owner told us all about the commitment, the money for equipment, and how many days a week they practice (which is 2 to 3 times for 2 hours). We watched the team run drills, it was very exciting.

This team was very new; they had only been around for about 6 months so they were still in the building stages. Now I knew how to roller skate, I used to go skating every Friday night in my home town roller rink, I also used to skate on the beaches of Southern California consistently. However I have been living in the Northeast for several years and have not skated in a long time, so when it came time for me to “tryout” I was very nervous.

The type of skate that we use to play Derby in is different then I was used to, but I put them on started skating around the track and it took a few minutes but I was able to stay up right and even stop!!! Well I signed up that day and started practicing with the team 2 days later. I had to borrow skates for the 1^st couple weeks until I was able to order my skates and all the safety equipment that we have to wear.

When I started working out full time with the team I soon found out that it was one hell of a workout, back then we would start the work out with 40 laps. Just for reference 25 laps around a regulation Derby track is 1 mile. My goal in the beginning was to just learn as much as possible, try my hardest to keep up with the girls that range 10, 15 and even 20 years younger then me. After about six months I found myself on the “Travel Team” this is the team that competes against other teams in different cities. We played 4 different teams 5 times plus 1 Charity bout where everyone on my team even if they are not a “travel team” member plays against each other. We did this for a local organization that helped gay and lesbian teens who had been kicked out of their homes after coming out to their parents.

So now its 2010 and our season has just begun, I made the Travel Team again this year and we have a full schedule of bouts at least 1 every month!! This season we also secured a home arena where we sold out our 1^st ever home game and had to turn fans away at the door!!!  We have 4 home bouts and 4 away bouts, 1 of the home bouts is a charity this time it is for a foundation that we started for one of our team mates who suffers from a rare form of blood cancer but this does not slow her down!!

Derby for me has been one of the greatest things; beyond my husband and kids to come into my life. I have met some of the best ladies. I am getting into great shape and feeling fantastic. I plan on doing this until I can not skate anymore and then I will coach, I wish I had found this 10 years ago! But hey for now I will keep on rolling and knocking girls on their asses!!! For as long as I can!!
