Josh Alan Friedman’s Black Cracker- Book Review
Josh Alan Friedman’s Black Cracker- Review by Cindi Loftus
Josh lived in a nice house, with his two younger brothers, was spoiled by his parents who were well off enough to pay for anything he wanted or needed, including a psychotic nanny, who treated the children to warmth or torture depending on her mood that day. To balance out his white middle class home life, Josh’s time at school or at play was spent with mostly black poor children who fought for everything they had.
Almost fitting in everywhere, wanting to fit in somewhere, but never quite fitting in anywhere, author Josh Alan Friedman looks back on his unusual upbringing. White & Jewish, his forward thinking parents wanted him to be part of the movement for racial equality. So at the age of six Josh entered first grade at all black South School. All black until Josh’s first day that is. This autobiographical novel follows Friedman through his journey from Black Cracker to White Cracker. A very interesting first hand account of growing up white in a black world. With a sarcastic touch, a few laughs, and some downright scary parts (he is beaten & hanged), Josh lives and learns in a divided world where he just doesn’t know which side he is on.
Josh Alan Friedman’s Black Cracker has amazing characters and interesting events in a conflict filled racially tense time frame, topped with some humor. Good autobiographical read

The little boy on the cover is so cute! What does Josh look like these days? Is he married? Where does he live? How did he turn out? Can you up date us on his life now and how this early upbringing changed him as an adult?
Hi sienna, this is Wyatt Doyle, I published BLACK CRACKER. I can’t speak for Josh Alan, but he’s said in interviews that growing up in a segregated school was both damaging and enriching; the reasons why are what BLACK CRACKER is all about.
For instance, it’s easy to pigeonhole a fanatic, but what about the vast majority of people whose attitudes fall somewhere between the easy definitions? People whose attitudes and behavior are despicable in some circumstances can also prove themselves likable and even admirable in others…and that doesn’t just apply to characters in BLACK CRACKER! We’re complex creatures, and it’s a complicated world. Pretending that isn’t the case is at the root of a lot of our problems.
To answer your other questions, Josh Alan is married and has made his home in Texas for many years now, where he has a dual career as a writer and musician. He writes as Josh Alan Friedman (8 books and counting), and performs and records as simply “Josh Alan” (4 CDs so far). To see what he’s up to, browse his archives or see clips of him in concert, visit his website, BlackCrackerOnline.com (which I moderate). It’s a treasure trove – and I ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie!
